A true standout in any aquarium, the Black Widow Frontosa is prized for its bold, broken patterning and calm, commanding presence. Unlike standard frontosas, these variant features irregular “widow” saddles and a heavier facial mask, giving each fish a unique, high contrast look that serious cichlid keepers appreciate.
These fish display a subtle blue-white sheen under proper lighting and develop more character as they mature, especially in body shape and pattern depth. Frontosa are a predatory fish by nature. Their diet in the wild is largely composed of smaller fish and crustaceans. In the aquarium, the Black Widow Frontosa will display its best coloration and behavior when kept in similar conditions to where they would be found in the wild – kept in groups, fed a varied protein-rich diet, and in very alkaline water.
Due to their size, dietary requirements, and intolerance for poor water quality, frontosa are not recommended as beginner fish. However, if the more experienced keeper provides these incredible fish with the right conditions, they can be rewarded with a very personable, elegant, showstopper of an addition to their aquarium.
⚠️ Note:
You will receive a fish with natural variation in patterning—no two Black Widow Frontosas are identical, which is part of what makes them so desirable.
